Lower back pain is a common condition impacting a lot of people. As one of the key providers of care for this condition, physical therapists are working to help prevent the transition to constant pain and disability. They are facilitating a pathway to functional restoration for those who are disabled. Insights from the research suggest that pain-related fear may be an emotional response to a lower back pain experience that the subject might have had. We have presented this as a framework for physical therapists to understand the sense-making processes involved in the fear-avoidance cycle and as a clinically useful framework to treat pain-related fear.
